Hwa Rang Do Code of Ethics

The Hwa Rang Do® Oh Kae  was composed by the Buddhist priest Won Kwan Bopsa 1800 years ago, under the mandate of King Chinghung, so that the Hwa Rang warriors may live by a strict code of ethics.
Supreme Grandmaster, Dr. Joo Bang Lee, created the Kyo Hoon, which are nine doctrines that better help the student follow the warrior's path. Together the Oh Kae and Kyo Hoon comprise the Hwa Rang Do® Meng Sae, our art's philosophical, ethical, and moral foundation.

Color Belt Tip and Rank Testing

In Tae Soo Do students test for their next belt rank when they show proficiency in their current material. Attendance in class is necessary to learn the material, but the number of classes attended is not the sole criterion for advancement in Tae Soo Do, as it is in some other places. When our Tae Soo Do student knows his/her belt rank material, and demonstrates that knowledge during class, then he/she will receive permission to test.  At the midway point of each rank the student will perform the half of the material he/she has learned, and receive a tip on the end of the belt. This Tip Test is held during class, before the instructor.  It is not a formal test, as is the belt rank test.

One of the reasons we teach Tae Soo Do/Hwa Rang Do is to engender the next generation with leadership abilities. Our students learn accountability, personal responsibility, and goal-setting since each of them personally determines their own test date by demonstrating their competence at their current level.

No student is promoted to the next rank until they earn that right. No one is promoted based upon another person’s work. No one is allowed to attempt testing until they earn the right to advance, and so the belt ranks maintain value, and each student can be proud of their accomplishment in earning each tip and  rank.

Protocol

At the Hwa Rang Do School of Jacksonville we follow the traditional protocols of Korea and martial arts.  The rules of the dojang are respected, we bow to instructors, the flags of the USA and South Korea, and we treat each student with respect.  The rules of our dojang are given to each student, and are reinforced in training.
