HWA RANG DO®
Hwa Rang D o has its roots in the martial
skills of the warriors who united the Korean Peninsula in ancient
times. The skills have survived since the first centuries
A.D., to be passed down to the students of today. The modern martial art
name of Hwa Rang Do®,
“The Way of the Flowering Manhood” was founded by Dr. Joo Bang Lee
in 1960. The ethical and moral code of the Hwarang is still honored in
Korea, and is taught to every student of Hwa Rang Do.
Hwa Rang Do is
one of the most comprehensive martial arts in the world, encompassing
all forms of combat: weapon and empty ha nd fighting, standing and
ground combat, linear and soft circular motion. This
unity of opposites is built upon the philosophy and principle of the
Um-Yang: that all entities in nature have opposites, and in
understanding and using these opposing forces we find balance in all
things. While there is great emphasis on the effectiveness of
techniques, there is constant attention to discipline, respect, and
tradition. At advanced levels, students also learn the
healing arts. This is another reflection of the Um-Yang: one
who has the ability to cause injury must also have the ability to
heal.
Lately the re has been a
great discussion regarding how 'traditional' martial arts do not meet
today's needs for self defense and 'real world' situations. Hwa Rang Do
meets these needs; indeed, it was founded in the real world, and the
men, women, and children training today are learning self defense
skills, developing physical, mental, and inner disciplines which are
serving them well every day.
